Local Arrested After Fight Breaks Out at Yard Sale

Local pet groomer Mary Jo Mullins was arrested Saturday, May 14 after an altercation with another shopper at a yard sale. Police were called to the scene at 9 a.m. by a homeowner in Fox Creek, who was selling the hell out of used baby clothes and empty Avon bottles.

Police, fire department personnel, ambulance, KCTV3 camera crews, and more bargain hunters arrived on scene within minutes to find an Excelsior Springs woman rolling around in the grass with a bloody broken nose and Mullins waving a rusty rake around and yelling, “That salt shaker was MINE!”

Witnesses confirmed that Mary Jo and the other shopper spotted a set of vintage pink poodle salt and pepper shakers at the same time. As Mary Jo was examining the female’s stopper, the other woman grabbed the male off the table, and that’s when the fight started.

Mullins was released on bond in time to bathe Ziggy Martin’s black lab at 11 a.m. and has a court date of June 7. The Excelsior Springs woman was treated and released, and when reached for comment said, "Those salt and pepper shakers will cost her a pretty penny now."

  1. This may be why I don't do garage sales or lawn sales. They can be dangerous! Thanks for the laugh.

  2. Oh, Deb! Growing up in a small town, I had the pleasure of reading in the "social column" of the local paper about my father flying with me by plane to Utah where I would be attending college. Not that the blurb was FUNNY, it was just ridiculous to think it made the paper. You capture some of the small details that small people in small towns "emulate."

    1. I still have some clippings from the paper in the town my parents were from. They printed stories about who had visitors, where they were from, what they ate, how long they stayed. That paper still prints every traffic violation too - Dad's tags expired once and he was so mad that it was news!

  3. Debbie, you always bring back memories old and not so old. My husband's aunt still gets a paper from where we used to live, she lived close by, and knows the people they write about. They had a great April 1 edition where they found oil on the town offices property and it was going to take care of all the taxes for everyone in town. It was hilarious. You keep us laughing, and I may have a pair of those shakers.

  4. Oh, this is so great. Modern shoppers duke it out on Black Friday in the Walmart electronics department. The small town yard sale was so much more fun!

  5. "examining the female's stopper" this made me grin like silly. Such a simple but well written piece. It evoked a clear and hilarious image in my mind. Did someone say it's part of a series? I think I'll have to investigate further if it is. :)

    1. Thanks, JB! Yeah, it started with a post about a missing woman found at a 4-way stop waiting her turn, and just seems to keep going...
